Two years ago today in Kigali,Rwanda we met Desmond for the very first time and became a family! In the adoption world we call this "Gotcha Day." Adopting Desmond is the best decision we have ever made. He has brought more love and laughter to our life than I ever imagined was possible. I'm not saying he's perfect because he is certainly strong willed (just like his mom and dad) but he so outgoing and friendly it's a true joy to watch.
If you have ever thought about adopting a child yourself I HIGHLY recommend it. I know you've read the horror stories that some people have gone through but for every bad story you hear there about 1,000 good ones out there. I'm not saying it's easy but neither is getting pregnant or having a biological baby or being a parent period. It's all hard! There are MILLIONS of children across the world who need a home and more importantly a loving parent.
Obviously, adopting isn't for everyone. I'm just saying that if you feel a tug at your heart and think there is a way that you could bring an adopted child into your home I urge you to pray and start seriously considering it as an option. I would be happy to talk to you about my experience and answer any questions that I can or at least point you to someone who knows more than me about the process.
One thing I know for SURE is that a parent is NOT who gives birth to a child a parent is who raises and LOVES a child day in and day out. Desmond may not share my DNA or look anything like me but he IS and will ALWAYS be MY SON.
